Abstract:
Introduction: Reiki is a method for natural care, it consists in transmitting the vital energy trough the hands; without being invasive, reiki works with the empathic and affectionate proximity. It is a support to conventional therapies and presents no counter-indications. It eases the symptoms of the illness and the eventual collateral effects due to the medicines. It is a support in the control of the pain.

Reiki is an open system, accessible to everybody thanks to its simplicity. Our study is meant for patients affected with advanced neoplasm in chemotherapeutic treatment in Day- Hospital regime.
Treatments are done by two reiki operators, for approximately half an hour on each patient, the patient on his bed, following indication from the doctor or nurse in charge.

Materials and Methods: Our study included 4 treatments involving patients specialy selected for their state of deep anxiety, painfull symptomatology and presenting collateral effects uncontroled by conventional therapy. Data collection process was established in agreement with medical doctors and professional nurses and included a diary the patient was meant to compile before, during, after and within the following 48 hours after each treatment.

Results: Between september 2004 and june 2005, 27 patients suffering of advanced neoplasm, mainly breast and colon cancer presenting metastatic developments were selected. The patient s sample included 8 men and 19 women between 30 and 70 years of age. The total number of treatment performed was 94; in 8 cases it had to be interupted due to the aggravation of the illness which did not allow any more to continue the therapy in day-hospital. Benefits from the treatment were felt physicaly but also as a moral help during chemio-therapy. Reiki treatments brought a deep sense of relaxation and in 10 treatments out of 94 ( i.e 10,6%) a sensible diminution of the pain was experienced for a mean duration of about 48 hours.

Conclusion: Our experience of the Reiki treatment seems to indicate that it has a positive influence as a psychologic help to face the effects of both diagnosis and therapy in patients affected by neoplastic diseases, and that it constitutes as well an integrated support in the case of conventional therapies.
